A small testament to interwar France, where sport, education, and the appreciation of effort gained new prominence in the upbringing of youth. This antique patinated metal medal bears the name MONGRÉ on its reverse, a reference to the Mongré institution in Villefranche-sur-Saône, an establishment whose history dates back to the 19th century and which long held an important place in regional education. The obverse is dedicated to sport. Two athletes are depicted in full motion around a ball, in a particularly dynamic composition. The stylized bodies, the palm decor, and the medal's highly geometric construction fully belong to the aesthetic vocabulary of the interwar period. The medal is part of the output of Fraisse-Demey, a French company particularly active in the creation of medals, badges, and sports awards during this period. In the 1920s and 1930s, these small objects readily moved beyond simple rewards to adopt the modern lines of their time. Movement, speed, and physical power became subjects in their own right, perfectly suited to the Art Deco aesthetic. Its association with Mongré adds an extra dimension. One can easily imagine this medal being awarded during a match, competition, or sporting event organized within the institution. Almost a century later, it thus retains something very vibrant of that era when educational institutions celebrated their students' achievements with medals intended to be kept. Its old patina, far from erasing its design, pleasantly highlights the reliefs and today gives it all the charm of an object that has traversed the decades. A lovely piece to add to a collection of antique medals, school, or sports memorabilia, but also a small decorative object rich in history. Circa 1930s.
