This special coffee table is clearly inspired by the famous Danish Smile Table, a design introduced by Johannes Andersen in the 1950s and 1960s.
That influence is immediately recognizable in the friendly lines and the clever, playful detail beneath the tabletop. Although the exact designer and manufacturer of this piece are unknown, everything points to a very high-quality, likely Dutch, production. This is an extremely rare table in which quality and attention to detail are immediately palpable; for instance, this table is rarer than the model that served as the source of inspiration.
The shape is elegant and balanced. The rectangular tabletop has rounded corners and slopes subtly towards the edges, making the whole piece light and refined. The slender, slightly tapered legs give the table an open appearance, while the base displays softly curved lines that add just that touch of tension to the design. The most striking element is the open space beneath the tabletop, intended for reading material or magazines. This opening is not only practical but also creates the characteristic ‘smile’ effect that is so typical of this type of design.
