Rosenthal Studio-Line
Vase Ensemble & Pair of Candle Holders
Design by Sami Wirkkala
for Rosenthal AG
Germany, 1982–1983
White porcelain with matte and glossy surfaces
A refined architectural ensemble from Rosenthal’s Studio-Line program, designed by Sami Wirkkala in the early 1980s. The group combines two sculptural vases with a pair of candle holders, forming a coherent study in geometric reduction and subtle surface articulation.
The set consists of:
• Vase – Model 3708/22 (1982)
• Vase – Model 3708/18 (1982)
• Pair of Candle Holders – Model 3708/7 (1983)
Executed in luminous white porcelain, the design explores the quiet tension between matte and glossy finishes. This interplay allows light to move across the surfaces, revealing the gentle curvature and architectural precision that define the series.
Form & Design Language
Both vases share a distinctive softly concave rectangular silhouette. Their bodies appear slightly folded inward, creating a subtle vertical wave that softens the strict geometry. The rim follows the same flowing contour, producing an object that feels both architectural and organic.
The two heights create a carefully balanced composition: the taller vase establishes vertical presence, while the smaller form introduces a more compact, sculptural rhythm.
The candle holders translate the same design language into a cubic format. Each porcelain block is shaped by a smooth, wave-like indentation that echoes the curvature of the vases. This gentle incision transforms a rigid cube into a dynamic object while preserving structural clarity.
Together, the four elements form a harmonious sculptural ensemble where proportion, light, and surface interact quietly.

Design Context
Sami Wirkkala developed his design language within the strong Scandinavian modernist tradition shaped by his father, the legendary designer Tapio Wirkkala. While influenced by Nordic minimalism, his work for Rosenthal demonstrates a distinctly architectural sensibility adapted to porcelain.
The series reflects several key design principles:
• sculptural reduction of form
• disciplined geometry softened by organic curvature
• subtle interplay of matte and glossy surfaces
• minimalism that relies entirely on form and light rather than decoration
Within the Rosenthal Studio-Line program—famous for collaborations with international designers—these pieces represent a particularly restrained and elegant interpretation of postmodern porcelain design.
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
No chips, cracks, or restorations observed.

Collector’s Perspective

• Documented Studio-Line production (1982–1983)
• Strong Scandinavian-influenced minimalism
• Rare survival as a cohesive group
Displayed together, the objects function almost as a small sculptural installation—calm, architectural, and quietly luminous.
