Beautiful vintage armchair model 1611, better known as the ‘Mattress Chair’, designed by Rob Parry and produced by Gelderland in the 1950s. Parry believed that good design should be accessible and not elitist; consequently, the 1611 became one of his most popular armchairs. In the 1960s, no fewer than 60,000 units were produced!
This chair comes from Bergen op Zoom and was originally in quite a sad state: the foam had crumbled, the fabric was full of stains, the webbing was broken, and the wooden frame was dried out. Quite a project, then!
Once in our workshop, the armchair was restored with great care. The teak frame was thoroughly cleaned and refinished, allowing the warm, deep wood color to come into its own once again. The original character of the chair has been preserved, but with a fresh, well-groomed look that is ready for years to come. The frame is fitted with new, sturdy Pirelli webbing, exactly the type that was originally used. The seat, the characteristic ‘mattress’, features new foam and has been reupholstered with high-quality beige wool fabric named Brisbane. The soft, neutral shade gives the armchair a timeless and serene appearance and perfectly complements the warm teak wood of the frame.
As you would expect from Rob Parry, this model is exceptionally comfortable. The 1611 invites you to lean back comfortably with a good book or a glass of wine. It is the kind of chair you sit in ‘for a moment’ and unknowingly stay much longer, exactly as Parry intended: made for people. Timeless, playful, and a beautiful example of 1950s Dutch design, ready for many more years of use.
