Original late 19th-century woodcut engraving, based on a drawing by the celebrated German maritime painter Fritz Stoltenberg, taken from a contemporary magazine. The engraving is enriched with original captions identifying the historic naval units present: the Kreuzer-Korvette "Irene" (commanded by Prince Henry of Prussia); the Panzer-Fregatte "Kaiser" and "Deutschland"; the Aviso "Blitz"; the training ships "Niobe" and "Nixe" and the corvette "Louise". The work portrays with extraordinary technical mastery the return of the Mediterranean Squadron to the military port of Kiel, an iconic moment in the history of the Imperial German Navy. Excellent overall condition, with natural and minor signs of aging. Black wooden frame included, measuring 30 x 40 cm.
