A 1970s vintage Palaset Palanox storage cabinet designed by Ristomatti Ratia. A versatile vintage storage cabinet that is not only practical but also stylish and timeless with a minimalist look that you can organize yourself. A flexible storage solution for everything from books and LPs to wine bottles.
Designed by Ristomatti Ratia, the son of the founder of Marimekko, for Treston Oy in 1972 in Finland.
Based on the smaller plastic Palaset cubes, the core idea behind the Palaset cubes was to create flexible storage solutions for all kinds of homes. They were cheerfully colorful (they were available in a variety of colors), multifunctional, and timeless in design. The collection quickly became popular, not only in Finland but also in the Scandinavian countries.
This system or cabinet consists of 12 separate modules in black and white (4 black and 8 white), which you can stack or rearrange to your liking. From open compartments to cabinets and drawers. Each module or block is also connected with a small locking piece, preventing them from sliding apart.
Unfortunately, the Palaset Palanox was produced for a short time from 1972 to 1973, which makes this system very special and now highly sought after by collectors. Only a few were made, presumably due to the trade embargo imposed by Arab countries and the subsequent 1973 oil crisis, triggered by the Yom Kippur War. The price of oil, the raw material for plastic, quadrupled.
The cabinet is otherwise in good condition, but has visible signs of wear, age-related discoloration, and stains, and is missing one door.
