Vintage Mexican Hand-Painted Ceramic Tonalá El Palomar Candle Holder
This hand-painted vintage candle holder comes from Tonalá, a city in Mexico known for its rich ceramic tradition. The object was made by Ken Edwards, who works in the El Palomar style. The pillar candle holder is shaped like a woman dressed in traditional Mexican patterns. The woman's arms are curved and hold two candles. Whether with or without candles, the candle holder is a true folkloric eye-catcher in your interior!
Tonala is located in the Mexican state of Jalisco and is considered the birthplace of Mexican folk ceramics. The candle holder shown here is a beautiful example of the "barro betus" technique, a traditional Tonalá technique. In this process, the earthenware is first shaped by hand and then painted with natural pigments. It is then bathed in betus oil (a resinous substance made from pine resin) before being fired in the kiln. The result? A glossy finish, deep colors, and a sturdy body.
The candlestick is in excellent vintage condition. One of the candlestick points is partially broken off, but still long enough to be used.
