Original Natural Leather Sofa with Deep Tufted Construction
This Kashima sofa was designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset and is one of the most sculptural and architectural lounge designs of the late 20th century. Introduced in the mid 1970s, the model reflects Ducaroy’s radical approach to seating, focusing on low living, generous proportions and a completely upholstered form without a traditional frame.
What makes this specific example truly exceptional is its provenance and state of preservation. Purchased new by the first owner in 1982, the sofa has remained in private ownership ever since and has never been reupholstered or structurally altered. All elements are fully original, including the leather, internal foam construction and stitching. Such untouched examples have become increasingly rare.
The original natural leather upholstery has developed a deep, rich patina with soft sheen and natural creasing, exactly as intended by Ligne Roset. The wear is even and coherent across the entire surface, with no dryness or damage, highlighting both the quality of the leather and the careful use over decades. The visible interior elements and original Ligne Roset label further confirm authenticity and originality.
The Kashima is constructed entirely from multiple densities of foam, creating a self supporting structure with remarkable comfort. The distinctive square tufting distributes tension evenly across the leather and reinforces the sculptural geometry. Compared to the Togo, the Kashima offers a more architectural silhouette with stronger back support and a grounded presence, making it equally suitable as a statement piece or within refined minimalist interiors.
