Large Studio Ceramic Vase
Netherlands, likely 1960s–1970s
Height: 33 cm
Unmarked studio ceramic vase of substantial size and refined presence, produced in the Netherlands during the post-war studio pottery period, circa 1960s–1970s.
The vase is formed as a tall, elegant ovoid with a narrow neck and softly rounded shoulders — a silhouette characteristic of Northern European studio ceramics of the mid-20th century. It is covered in a highly controlled reticulated high-iron glaze, often referred to as a “snakeskin” or micro-cell glaze. The surface displays an exceptionally fine and even network of raised, organic cells in warm reddish-brown tones over a lighter ground, creating a tactile, skin-like texture with subtle depth and rhythm.
The glaze is technically sophisticated and deliberately unstable in appearance, a result of differential shrinkage during firing. Minor glaze tension lines visible in places are inherent to this glaze type and should be understood as firing characteristics rather than defects. The interior is finished in a contrasting white glaze, a detail frequently encountered in Dutch studio pottery of the period.
The base shows a pale buff stoneware body with natural iron speckling and a partially glazed central area, consistent with hand-thrown studio production rather than industrial manufacture. The absence of a signature is not unusual for Dutch workshop ceramics of this era, particularly for pieces produced in small series.
Stylistically and technically, the vase relates closely to Dutch studio traditions associated with Mobach Utrecht and the broader Nieuwe Keramiek movement, which emphasised form, material integrity, and experimental glaze chemistry. While a definitive attribution cannot be made without a mark, the form, clay body, glaze control, and provenance strongly support a Dutch origin.
A sculptural and tactile object that works equally well as a standalone piece or within a serious ceramic collection.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations. Glaze characteristics are consistent with the firing process.
