Beautiful vintage dresser from the 1950s, designed by Leslie Diamont and produced by the American furniture maker Conant Ball. Funny thing: although this piece is 100% American, it has a surprising resemblance to the famous birch series by Cees Braakman for Pastoe. And honestly, that’s not so far-fetched, Braakman travelled through the US in the ’50s to study modern production techniques, and his birch series appeared not long after. Connect the dots as you please.
We picked up this dresser, together with a matching desk, in a small Dutch village called Hoornaar. Quite wild if you think about it: that’s about 5,614 km from where this thing originally came from (Massachusetts). How it ended up in the Netherlands? The previous owners had no clue either, so feel free to craft your own conspiracy theory.
Anyway, back to the actual piece. The dresser is made of solid birch and is in genuinely great vintage condition. The only thing worth mentioning: a handful of scratches on the top surface, some deeper than others. But honestly, they give it exactly that bit of lived-in character that makes a 70-year-old piece feel real.
It features three large drawers that open smoothly and stands firmly on four charming tapered legs. The whole thing is heavy, and you can feel the quality the second you touch it. Proper “Made in the USA” craftsmanship, even stamped inside one of the drawers.
Just a super cool American mid-century design with a surprisingly Dutch-design vibe thanks to its clean lines and modest detailing. Pieces like this do not pop up often, especially not in Europe. So if you’re into unique finds… well, you know what to do.
