A striking sculptural ceramic vase from the golden era of Vallauris, likely attributable to Atelier Cerenne, the renowned workshop directed by Marino de la Vaucour. The piece exhibits hallmark traits of the studio’s mid-century output—dynamic, almost biomorphic form, glazed in a fiery high-gloss red that flows across a deep black surface, then cascades into a tactile, cratered lava texture in mottled celadon green.
The silhouette fuses gesture and geometry: a tapering mouth, fluid handle, and asymmetrical base suggest both motion and monumentality. With its looped negative space and alien tactility, the vase stands at the intersection of Brutalism and French modernism, echoing the aesthetics of freeform sculpture and postwar ceramic abstraction.
Atelier Cerenne, founded in Vallauris in 1945 and later directed by de la Vaucour, was among the most influential studios of the region’s postwar renaissance—alongside names such as Accolay, Les Argonautes, and Capron. Known for their bold glazes and architectural vessels, Cerenne’s works often explored the expressive possibilities of textured clay and radical form. While this piece is unsigned, the glaze technique and form bear strong resemblance to other documented pieces from the Cerenne workshop.
