Product description
Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd, Abracadabra, 1990 Color lithograph Number 34200Work bearing artist's signature, title, and individual number (in pencil)Size of work 5266Work is framedCarl Fredrik Reuterswärd was born in 1934, he died in 2016. He was a Swedish painter and sculptor. He studied with Fernand Léger in Paris in 1951 and was professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1965 to 1969. In 1974 he was a visiting professor at the Minneapolis School of Art in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1986 he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal for Painting. Reuterswärd is known for his sculpture of a knotted gun, entitled No Violence, which is on display in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Versions of this work can also be seen in Berlin, Stockholm and Gothenburg. In 1989, Reuterswärd suffered a stroke that forced him to switch from his right hand to his left. He described the period after the stroke as a form of liberation. He began drawing with his left hand, and the lines and patterns seem to point the researcher both backward and forward in time, before and after the stroke. The monumental oil pastel drawings from the late 1990s feature both mythological figures and acrobatic exercises. They are enigmatic and dreamlike, and while their expression differs from the early conceptual exercises, they also relate to the artist's ongoing exploration of new styles and approaches.
