Original vintage Viscontea cocoon lamp – designed by the brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for FLOS – Italy in the 1960s/70s.
These are still being made new, but this is an old vintage from the 60s/70s. The new ones are whiter. Moreover, this particular example is in exceptionally good condition. Not a single crack or hole. The frame is also in perfect, non-oxidized condition. It is very rare to find this vintage edition in this condition.
The Viscontea is an iconic pendant lamp designed by the Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1960 for the lighting company Flos. The lamp is one of the first examples of the innovative "cocoon" technique that Flos introduced in the 1960s.
The Viscontea lamp has an organic, almost cloud-like shape created by the use of a special plastic coating, known as a cocoon, which is sprayed over a metal frame. This material creates a semi-transparent, light-diffusing surface that gives the lamp a soft and warm appearance.
The cocoon material, a synthetic resin originally developed in the United States for military purposes (to protect ex-war equipment from the elements), was introduced to the design world by the Castiglioni brothers. By spraying the resin in layers over the metal frame, a unique texture was created that gives the lamp its distinctive appearance.
Later, this technique was also introduced in Germany, among other places, by the Goldkant company.
The Viscontea is one of the many iconic designs by the Castiglioni brothers and remains a beloved piece in the world of design lighting. The lamp is included in various design collections and is considered a classic in modern lighting history.
Achille (1918-2002) and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) were two influential Italian designers who gained worldwide recognition for their groundbreaking work in industrial and product design. They are primarily known for their innovative and often playful designs, which combine functionality and aesthetics in a unique way. During the 1960s, they designed several iconic lamps (Arco, Snoopy, Gatto,...) that contributed to the success of FLOS.
The designs of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni have had a lasting influence on contemporary design. Several of their design pieces are included in the collections of museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
