D. Meredew Ltd, is a little-known British furniture maker, and was a medium-sized manufacturer in the 1960s and 1970s. They were based in Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. Starting in London, Frederick Hard, who was the owner, took some 50 families to the new town of Letchworth in 1914. By 1938, they employed 177 people. Sometime in the 1950s (probably around 1955/57) they hired their first staff designer, a German emigrant named Alphons Loebenstein (then 57 years old) who persuaded the company to follow a route similar to that of competitor G Plan. And with success!
Indeed, between 1950 and 1965, sales increased by a factor of 40.
The workforce grew steadily from 150 to about 1,500 during the same period. This was the height of British Mid - Century furniture production, with small local companies closing while larger ones expanded.
One was still a lot smaller than manufacturer G Plan, then the leading British makers of modern furniture. Based on surviving catalogs, the suspicion travels that they were of similar size to McIntosh and a tad larger than manufacturer White + Newton. It is extraordinary that today we rarely encounter Meredew furniture, in contrast to furniture made by McIntosh, a factory that employed even far fewer people. The suspicion is that many unbranded products were produced for large retailers, to which they then attached their own logo.
Meredew branded furniture is nowadays very rare and scarce, but this cool chest of drawers is a rare and typical English example.
We see in 1 drawer neatly marked, and the whole is timelessly sleek and functional design and made with great attention to detail and English craftsmanship. There are 3 drawers with so-called blind handles present. Everything is finished in a beautiful color veneer. The whole stands on an elegant base with beautiful legs.
Although already over 60 years old, the furniture is in a nice vintage condition with no major damage to the sides, the traces of use and discoloration are appropriate for a piece of furniture of this age and in our eyes not very disturbingly present.
A rare vintage chest of drawers, functional, timeless and full of character, model "Rowley" is ready to add another chapter to this beautiful story in your home!
