In the years following World War II, Belgium, like other Western countries, took a renewed interest in ceramics. Around the pillars of Joost Maréchal, the ateliers Perignem and Amphora, Rogier and Elisabeth Vandeweghe, Yves Rhayé, Johan Nyssen, Elie Vandamme and Leon Goossens, a generation flourished that developed a vocabulary that was unique in Europe. At the intersection of a tradition of personal studios as in French art pottery and a studio logic with Germanic or English influences, this generation of Belgian artists found expression in a language that is now very recognizable.
From Jan Dries to Paul de Bruyne, via Jan Nols in Torhout on the outskirts of Bruges or Yvette Manoy in Namur, it was a whole generation that soon abandoned the expression of popular images to turn to abstract settings that, in their eyes, embodied the deployment of a new expression of modernity, the ambition of which they shared with the leaders of painting such as Bissière, Manessier and Estève.
Jan Nolf, born in 1931, trained at the Hoger Instituut voor Kunst Sint Lucas in Ghent and then at La Cambre in Brussels. In 1956 he opened his own studio in Bruges and divided his field of activity between his two activities as a potter and antiquarian, inadvertently reviving an almost classical tradition in Japan, where potters and tea masters often worked as antiquarians. Between 1956 and 1972 he had numerous solo and group exhibitions, most notably at the 1958 Brussels exhibition and at the annual exhibitions of West Flanders artists (Scheppend Ambacht in West Flanders). In 1979, health problems forced him to quit ceramics; he devoted himself to painting until his death twenty years later in 1999.
