The story of a Belgian innovation: the Ackermans tile
This tile, produced by the Ackermans company (Victor & Georges Ackermans, founded in 1825), a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete and modern construction techniques, is part of the patented "translucent concrete" (or Glass Concrete) system.
These ingenious elements, often incorporating cast glass blocks, sometimes sourced from the famous Val-Saint-Lambert crystal factory, were used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to allow natural light into dark spaces such as cellars, basement windows, illuminated sidewalks (pavement windows), and roof terraces.
Today, this object perfectly embodies the Brutalist style, an architectural movement from the 1950s to the 1970s that celebrated raw, unfinished materials and bold geometric shapes. Its visible texture and modular shape make it a highly sought-after mid-century design piece, which can be transformed into a wall sculpture or a unique table lamp.
