Product description
This American black walnut chest of drawers is a superb example of George Nakashima's craftsmanship. Made to order for a private client in 1955, the piece's angular forms and streamlined structure allow Nakashima's favorite material, wood, to shine through with its visible natural grain and knots. The chest features three full-size drawers and one smaller one. The drawer handles are blended into the body of the chest and add a subtle but defining detail to the piece, giving it a lasting and timeless design. This chest of drawers has been restored, wick varnished so as not to add too much shine, and is in superb condition. The chest is signed on the back with the name of its patron, Mr. Manny Hillman. A copy of the original receipt dated June 1955 and a certificate of authenticity from Mira Nakashima will be given to the buyer. George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a Japanese-American architect, cabinetmaker and furniture maker considered the father of the "American Craft" movement. Renowned for his fascination and instinctive sense of working with natural elements, from 1949 onwards he devoted his entire career and creative panoply to wood, a material he chose himself. George Nakashima's focus is on highlighting the beauty of a piece of wood in simple forms derived from Japanese tradition and the beginnings of American craftsmanship. His rich know-how and deep respect for the material combine to create timeless pieces of great simplicity, with pure lines and delicate proportions.
