The chair pictured is the "Vilbert" model, which was designed by Danish designer Verner Panton for IKEA in 1993. The chair is a rare example of the short but striking collaboration between the Swedish furniture store and the renowned avant-garde designer, who is known for his experimental shapes and bold color concepts. The model was only produced for a short time and is now a coveted collector's item among design aficionados.
The "Vilbert" chair consists of four flat MDF panels that are joined together by visible screw connections to form a sculptural and almost geometric-abstract seat shape.
It is characterized by its consistently angular structure, in which all elements are cut at right angles or diagonally. The unusual design completely dispenses with classic curves or ergonomic modeling and, thanks to its strict design language, almost looks like a furniture object from an architectural concept model.
The surfaces are coated with melamine and come in bold, contrasting colors.
The choice of colors includes a strong blue for the backrest, a bright red for the seat, a pastel turquoise for the front leg and a deep purple for the back leg - a typical play of colors from Panton's oeuvre that is reminiscent of his well-known spatial and textile installations. The edges of the panels are blackened and further emphasize the constructive clarity.
The lower back of the chair bears an original label with the IKEA logo and Verner Panton's signature, which further emphasizes the authenticity of this model.
