Murano Glass Vase by Flavio Poli for Seguso
Murano, Italy, ca. 1960
This striking Murano glass vase was designed by Flavio Poli around 1960, during one of the most innovative periods in post-war Italian glassmaking. Executed in thick, sculptural crystal with an intense aquamarine core, the vase is characterized by sharply faceted sides that frame a fluid, organic inner form. The contrast between precise geometry and soft internal contours creates a dramatic play of light, depth, and refraction—hallmarks of Poli’s mature style.
Flavio Poli (1900–1984) was one of the most influential figures of 20th-century Murano design. After early experience as a painter and glass decorator, he became artistic director at Seguso Vetri d’Arte in the late 1930s. There, especially from the 1950s to the early 1960s, Poli revolutionized Murano aesthetics by introducing bold architectural forms, heavy Sommerso glass, and a modernist language aligned with international design trends.
The Seguso family, active in Murano since the Middle Ages, played a crucial role in bridging traditional Venetian glassmaking with modern design. Under Poli’s direction, Seguso gained international recognition, exhibiting at major events such as the Venice Biennale and exporting Murano glass to leading galleries and collectors worldwide.
This vase exemplifies that golden era: a refined yet powerful object that embodies the dialogue between craftsmanship and modern design, making it a highly collectible example of mid-century Murano glass.
