About the maker:
Paul KINGMA
Paul Kingma is known for his understated brutalist coffee tables, the Tableaux series, with inlaid elements of ceramic, stone, and brass. He was also a sculptor and mosaic artist before successfully experimenting with design and furniture.
He was born in The Hague in 1931 and studied art in Arnhem before attending the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He sculpted several well-known public art commissions in cities like Utrecht and Eindhoven and traveled extensively, absorbing culture and practice at every opportunity.
Kingma's love for mosaic art never left him, and he was a collector of fossils, petrified wood, stones, and fragments, which often found their way into his assemblages, which he considered "scenes" or works of art in their own right. Each of the tables he created was unique, its distinctive pattern and design recognizable, yet a variety of materials were used to achieve the final "picture" on his tabletop.
Paul Kingma was a generous teacher and inspired his students to explore the many possibilities of sculpture and mixed media while teaching at the Institute for Visual Arts in Amersfoort, the Netherlands.
Purchased in 1959 and still in the possession of its original owner.
This is likely one of his first works, before he began carving a date.
