A small object that alone tells the story of an entire era, when Vallauris became one of the great centers of French ceramics and workshops freely reinvented familiar household objects. This hand-held candlestick takes up the ancient form of the candle holder that was once carried from room to room, but tradition is here completely transformed by the aesthetics of the 1960s. The long, generously sculpted handle, the circular cup, and the central well designed to hold the candle create a silhouette that is both rustic and resolutely modern. The decoration is particularly warm. A deep, glossy brown serves as a backdrop for ruby red hues, while foamy white, turquoise, and sea-green enamels spread freely over the cup and even onto the handle. The firing effects give each part a different texture and nuance, characteristic of the exploration of enamels that largely defined the personality of post-war Vallauris ceramics. The piece bears the handwritten inscription 'Vallauris' on its base. It shows two slight impacts on the edges, traces of its history that do not detract from its beautiful decorative effect. An authentic small piece from Vallauris, full of character and representative of the creative effervescence of the workshops on the French Riviera during the 1960s. Cup diameter approximately 10 cm.
