A small object that, by itself, tells the story of an entire era: when Vallauris became one of the great centers of French ceramics and where workshops freely reinvented familiar household objects. This hand-held candlestick revives the ancient form of the candle holder that was once carried from room to room, but tradition here is completely upended by the aesthetic of the 1960s. The long, generously modeled handle, the circular cup, and the central receptacle designed to hold the candle create a silhouette that is both rustic and decidedly modern. The decoration is particularly warm. A deep, glossy brown serves as a backdrop for ruby red hues, while foamy white, turquoise, and sea-green enamels spread freely over the cup and even onto the handle. The firing effects give each part a different texture and nuance, characteristic of this exploration of enamels that largely defined the personality of Vallauris ceramics after the war. The piece bears the handwritten inscription 'Vallauris' on its base. It has two slight imperfections on the edges, traces of its history that do not detract from its beautiful decorative effect. An authentic small piece from Vallauris, full of character and representative of the creative effervescence of the workshops on the French Riviera during the 1960s. Cup diameter approximately 10 cm.
