About Val St. Lambert:
The Val-Saint-Lambert crystal factory began in 1826 on the grounds of the former Cistercian Abbey of Saint Lambert in Seraing. It was headed by François Kemlin and Auguste Lelièvre. Because of its favorable location near the Meuse River, a coal-rich environment and the railroad, the factory quickly grew into an important center for the Belgian glass industry. In the nineteenth century, the land around the abbey was dotted with workers' houses, gardens, a store, school and hospital.
Val-Saint-Lambert is still internationally known as a producer of glassware. In the 1980s, the factory was threatened with bankruptcy and some of the shares were taken over by the government. Even today, production at Val-Saint-Lambert continues to take place using traditional methods. The company is purveyor to the Belgian royal family and works with various designers. Characteristic objects are made of double colored and cut crystal.
