An elegant and increasingly hard-to-find cake stand by Val Saint Lambert, produced in pressed crystal and documented in the renowned 1913 catalogue as part of the “Service Gilbert” collection
This impressive example represents the largest size of the model, measuring approximately 31 cm in diameter, making it a striking centerpiece for a dining table, dessert presentation, or decorative display. The design beautifully reflects the transition from the Belle Époque into the early twentieth century, combining geometric precision with rich ornamental detail. The intricate diamond-point texture, fan motifs, and scalloped rim create a remarkable play of light, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Val Saint Lambert’s moulded crystal production.
Although made using pressed-crystal techniques, the piece possesses a brilliance and visual depth often associated with much more expensive cut crystal. The substantial pedestal base further enhances its elegant proportions and architectural presence.
Condition is very good for an antique object more than a century old. The stand remains well preserved, with no major damage. There are some light, shallow surface scratches consistent with age and careful use, visible in the final photographs. These minor signs of wear do not detract from the overall beauty or display quality of the piece.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
