Product description
Exceptional, unique and very detailed Tramp Art crucifix, with a metal corpus, the cross is handmade from carved wood pieces, a rare folk art collectible from the early 20th century. Tramp Art is a beautiful form of folk art; anyone could create a Tramp Art object with scrap wood they had on hand, ranging from boxes and frames to large functional furniture. These unique items therefore have a high collector's value and are highly sought after. Tramp Art is a style of woodworking that emerged in America in the second half of the 19th century. Some of the defining characteristics of Tramp Art include chip or notch carving, the reclamation of inexpensive or available wood, such as that from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools like pocket knives, and the layering of materials in geometric shapes using glue or nails. This specific piece is very detailed and finely carved from wood, featuring a metal or tin corpus of Christ, surrounded by the Instruments of the Passion. The ladder and the spear/sponge: placed behind the cross, used during the crucifixion and to remove Christ from the cross. The rooster: visible at the bottom right, symbolizing Peter's denial of Christ. The crown of thorns: hanging directly behind the center of the cross. The skull with crossed bones: located at the foot of the cross, symbolizing Golgotha (the “Place of the Skull”) and Adam's skull. The hammer and pliers: used to drive in and remove nails. The chalice: symbolizes the Holy Grail or the Last Supper. The robe or shroud: elegantly draped over the upper arms of the cross. The dice / the number '30': Refers to the thirty pieces of silver for which Judas betrayed Jesus, or to the Roman soldiers casting lots for Jesus' tunic. This object is in very good antique condition, with only slight signs of age and use appropriate for the material and age; some small pieces are missing at the front, please check the photos for more details! Dimensions: 20x15x56cm. Weight: 1.003kg
