A unique historical document of West African Modernism (1959)
Up for auction: a beautiful and historically significant work on black cardboard, titled "Chasse aux zèbres" (Zebra Hunt). This painting is an authentic example of the modern art movement that emerged in French-speaking West Africa in the 1950s, a crucial period just before the independence of many African nations.
Characteristics & Details:
Artist:
Signed lower left by Issé. Works from these studios are known for their elegant, stylized figures and powerful compositions.
Dating: Precisely dated 16-2-59 (February 16, 1959). This early and precise dating makes this object very interesting for collectors of mid-century African art.
Dimensions: 32 x 25 cm.
Technique: Gouache/tempera on deep black cardboard. The technique creates a luminous contrast, making the colors (cobalt blue, ochre yellow, and white) seem to leap off the paper.
Depiction: A dynamic hunting scene. Four hunters with spears surround two zebras. The rhythmic rendering of the grass and the hunters' elongated bodies are typical of the influential "Poto-Poto" style or related workshops from Dakar or Abidjan.
Condition & Provenance:

The work is in excellent vintage condition. The colors have remained exceptionally fresh. No major damage, only minor signs of age along the edges, consistent with its age of 66.

*The artwork will be carefully packaged in bubble wrap and placed in a simple frame to prevent wrinkling or damage (see last photo).
