these three authentic Shin-hanga Woodblock Prints are made by the workshop of Hasegawa Sadanobu III, the Uchida Publishing House, a well-known Kyoto publisher; they have produced many Maiko scenes in Kyoto during the 1950s and 60s, these three woodblock prints were printed in 1950s. Many famous Shin-hanga artists are renowned for their evocative winter landscapes, often featuring the same scenes in this set. This series is featuring maiko viewed from behind in a traditional Kyoto setting, it is a classic theme used by artists like Sadanobu III and Minagawa Chieko to capture the charm of old Japan. The set of three included: ( Line up from left to right) Snow at Yanagibashi-Maiko on a Bridge Maiko at the Silver Pavilion by 浪関さNamizeki-saku Maiko viewing a Red Pagoda from a snowy Verandah by Namizeki These authentic woodblock prints belongs to the Shin-hanga ("new prints") art movement in Japan, which revitalised traditional Japanese woodblock printing in the early 20th century. The signatures is accompanied by a traditional red artist seal (hanko) used to authenticate Japanese woodblock prints which could be seen in these authentic woodblock prints. The black ink writing in the prints is the artist's signature, which is written in a stylized cursive script (草書, sōsho), the red stamp directly below the signature is a hanko (artist's seal). About the artist: Hasegawa Sadanobu III was a prominent artist based in Kyoto, belonging to a lineage of esteemed woodblock printers. His work is a central part of the Shin-hanga movement, which modernised traditional Japanese art during the mid-20th century. These charming scenes depicting: Left: a maiko (apprentice geisha) crossing a snow-covered bridge during winter, carrying an umbrella and features a red obi (sash) with a bold leaf pattern and nice shading on the water and sky Centre: a maiko visiting Ginkakuji or the Silver Pavilion in Kyoto. She pauses along the edge of the pond with an umbrella in hand, looking across the water at the temple, shadows falling across the shore. A handsome design, detailed with accents of dark gold metallic pigment on the obi. Right: a maiko enjoying the view from a verandah on a winter night. Snow covers the railings and blankets the trees in the distance, a red pagoda Kiyomizu-dera temple, an iconic Kyoto landmark, adding a colourful accent against the evening sky. She wears a green floral print kimono, tied with an obi that features cranes in flight and streaks of metallic gold pigment.
