For sale is a large serving tray, model 81, designed and made by Georg Mendelssohn, Dresden-Hellerau, 1920. The tray features an elongated, chased brass base with a slightly raised rim and engraved, repeating motifs. Dimensions: Height approx. 2 cm, Length approx. 20 cm, Depth approx. 12 cm. The underside is marked with the hallmarks "Mendelssohn" and "81".
Georg Mendelssohn was a German craftsman, metal artist, and goldsmith. He was born in Dorpat in 1886 and died in Baden-Baden in 1955. He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsmen). In 1920, at a young age, he received a Grand Prix at the Brussels World's Fair. He emigrated to France in 1933. His work had a lasting influence, particularly on goldsmiths, silversmiths, and metal sculptors at the Weimar, Dessau, and later the Bauhaus in Berlin, including Alfred Schäfter, Marianne Brandt, and Hans Przyrembel. His works are included in the collection of the Dresden Museum of Decorative Arts at Pillnitz Palace, among others.
