Anthonius (Toon) Henricus Koster (Schiedam, January 19, 1913 - Utrecht, November 25, 1989) is an artist who cannot be placed within a specific art historical movement. His work is characterized by a distinctive, instantly recognizable style. The Hague and Amsterdam Schools were influential, however. The generous skies of Weissenbruch, the loose brushwork of Breitner, and the dark palette of the Belgian expressionist Permeke can be found in his oeuvre. He studied at the Rotterdam Art Academy around 1934 under Johannes Heijberg and Willem van Dort.
After marrying in early 1940, Koster found a home in Nieuwkoop. Ten years later, the family moved to Noorden. Many of his paintings were created in and around these villages. In 1955, Koster created several murals for the National Energy Manifestation 1955 (E55) in Rotterdam. He collaborated with Karel Appel, among others. In the 1960s, Koster produced many paintings that were sold in the United States. These paintings often shared the same design: a polder landscape illuminated by moonlight. He sometimes painted ten to fifteen of them a day. This contributed to Koster's reputation as a "bread painter."
In the final years of his life, Koster received greater recognition for his oeuvre through several major exhibitions.
