Anthonius (Toon) Henricus Koster (Schiedam, January 19, 1913 – Utrecht, November 25, 1989) was an artist who could not be placed within a specific art historical movement. His works are characterized by a distinctive, immediately recognizable style. The Hague School and the Amsterdam School did have an influence, however. The expansive skies of Weissenbruch, the loose brushstrokes of Breitner, and the dark palette of the Belgian Expressionist Permeke can be found in his oeuvre. Around 1934, he studied at the Rotterdam Art Academy under Johannes Heijberg and Willem van Dort. After marrying in early 1940, Koster found a home in Nieuwkoop. Ten years later, the family moved to Noorden. Many of his paintings were created in and around these villages. In 1955, Koster created various murals for the National Energy Manifestation 1955 (E55) in Rotterdam. In doing so, he collaborated with Karel Appel, among others. In the 1960s, Koster produced many paintings that were sold in the United States. These paintings often shared the same composition: a polder landscape illuminated by moonlight. He sometimes produced as many as ten to fifteen a day. Partly due to this, Koster acquired the reputation of a 'bread-and-butter painter'. In the final years of his life, Koster received greater appreciation for his oeuvre in the form of several major exhibitions.
