Terracotta sculpture of a mandolin player after 'Mignon' by Joseph Le Guluche, 57.5 cm high.
This tall sculpture is striking and eye-catching. This version, simply covered in white, is much more appealing than the glazed and colored versions, such as the originals by Joseph Le Guluche.
It is signed, and the signature needs to be identified (see photo 6). Similarly, the stamp needs to be identified (see photo 4).
This is therefore a work after Joseph Le Guluche (1849-1915), or at least a reinterpretation of this character. The character of Mignon comes from a comic opera, and previously from a novel by Goethe. However, in this novel, his tragic end could have clashed with the conventions of comic operas, which required a happy ending. Thus, in the pragmatic French version, Mignon (pronounced Mignonne, like Goethe) gets married, and his legacy is preserved for numerous descendants. And that also left room for hundreds of additional representations!
This sculpture is in very good (if not excellent) condition: no chips or cracks. There is a small area of missing white paint on the lower part of the left leg (see photo 9).
The height is 57.5 cm, and the 75 cl wine bottle is not included but is shown for comparison.
The weight is 3.8 kg; the package weight will exceed 5 kg to account for the extensive protective packaging.
