Product description
A teak desk designed by Henning Jensen and Torben Valeur, manufactured by Danish company Munch in the 1960s. This signed piece represents the peak period of Scandinavian office furniture design, when executive spaces were furnished with pieces combining authoritative presence with carefully considered functionality. The generous work surface and distinctive open frame construction give this desk a decidedly executive character, setting it apart from typical home office furniture.
The design centres on a wooden frame that forms both the structural skeleton and the primary visual element. The frame runs from the legs through the underside of the top, revealing the furniture's construction rather than concealing it. A three-drawer unit suspended beneath the surface provides storage for documents and supplies while leaving ample clearance for seating. Teak veneer covers the top and drawer unit, creating a warm, unified surface. The drawer pulls stand out against the fronts as subtle accents.
Henning Jensen and Torben Valeur belong to the generation of Danish designers who built their reputation on furniture with prominently expressed wooden frames. Their approach aligned with a movement away from heaviness toward lightness and transparency of form — furniture that showed how it was made rather than hiding it. Their collaboration with Munch allowed for the realisation of designs demanding precise craftsmanship, where every visible joint had to be executed flawlessly.
The work surface spans over two metres in width, providing comfortable space for one person to spread out documents or for collaborative work. The knee clearance of one hundred and fifty centimetres allows freedom of movement. This desk suits an executive office, studio, or any space requiring a statement piece.
Condition is good. The surface shows minor scratches and small marks consistent with use. Small areas of damage have been filled during restoration. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
