Vintage coffee table by J. Belarti – teak, oak & lava ceramic – 1950s/60s
Large vintage coffee table combining teak, oak, and glazed lava ceramic, signed J. Belarti. A sculptural and decorative piece, emblematic of French design from the 1950s and 60s.
Rectangular top with a central inset of glazed lava ceramic, featuring an abstract design in shades of green, blue, and black. The lava ceramic is handmade, making each piece unique. Solid wood frame (teak and oak), beautiful proportions, and meticulous finish. Elegant and stable base, typical of French modernist furniture. This table is as decorative as it is functional, ideal for a vintage, designer, or gallery interior.
Some claim that behind this name lies Julien de Covemaeker (a Belgian ceramicist born in 1927, who worked in France and passed away in 2008), who supposedly chose Belarti by combining the words BELges (Belgians) and ARTIstes (artists). It's said that the "J" stands for Julien, but even more often, it's believed he simply chose "Juliette"... You'll therefore see many advertisements mentioning pieces by "Juliette Belarti."
