This futuristic-looking table lamp is the KD29 model, designed by Joe Colombo in 1967 for the Italian manufacturer Kartell.
As a representative of the radically modern design of the 1960s, the KD29 combines form, function and material innovations in a clear, iconic silhouette. Made of ABS plastic in glossy black and cream white, it impresses with its rounded, organic design language, which is strongly influenced by the space-age style. The semi-dome-shaped luminaire shell rests on a raised base on one side, which merges into the circular base and also serves as a support for the light source.
A special feature of the KD29 is the shelf integrated into the base with four differently shaped recesses - ideal for storing small utensils such as office accessories, coins or jewelry.
The light source is mounted horizontally in the upper part of the shade and is diffused by an opaque plastic cover, creating a pleasantly soft, downward-directed light. The switch is elegantly recessed into the shelf, while the supply cable runs unobtrusively along the back. In this design, Joe Colombo combined futuristic aesthetics with practical everyday usability in an exemplary way - a trademark of his work and typical of Kartell's early design history.
