Expressionist oil painting by the outstanding Danish-Swedish painter, graphic artist and illustrator Jules Schyl (1893-1977). The picture was painted by the artist in the 1960s, most probably during his many study trips to Paris. It shows a view of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The painting is handwritten by the artist in the upper left corner. Made in oil technique on canvas. On the back, the stamp of the Swedish auction house Stockholms Auktionsverk is stamped on the stretcher.
Jules Victor Richard Schyl
( Viktor Jules Richard Schylow), born October 12, 1893 in Copenhagen, died in 1977 in Malmö, was a Swedish drawing teacher, painter, graphic artist and illustrator.
Schyl studied in Stockholm at the Technical School 1913-1914, and in 1914-1917 he was educated as a drawing teacher at the Higher School of Art and Design. At the same time, he studied painting at the Althina painting school. After the Stockholm era, he continued his studies with Joakim Skovgaard, Gotfred Rode and Julius Paulsen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen 1917-1919. During this period, Schyl also returned on numerous study trips to Germany, incl. (where he briefly visited an etching school in Dresden), the Netherlands, France and Italy.
He exhibited with NJ Mangor and G Wang in Copenhagen in 1918, and together with Evald Ask and Arvid Källström at the Lund University Art Museum in 1923. He exhibited separately at the SDS Room in 1939 and at the Malmö Museum in 1944. From 1919, . took part in collective exhibitions organized by the Skåne art association and regularly participated in the art group The Twelve from the beginning in 1924, and with the Aura art group about 30 times. In addition, he participated in exhibitions organized by the Swedish General Art Association, The Swedish Association for the Academy of Fine Arts, an exhibition of Scandinavian art in Charlottenborg in Copenhagen 1946, Scanan artists at Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm 1951, Lhote and the Swedes at the Archives of Decorative Arts in Lund 1961, an exhibition by the Art Association Limhamn Facett at Malmö City Hall and at several exhibitions with provincial arts representatives in various parts of Skåne. His public works include murals at the Åke Hans restaurant in Lund, the entrance to Lund City Hall and the Malmö national venue in Lund.
