Some dinnerware sets are recognizable at first glance. The Colmar model from the Longchamp faience factory is one of them, with its elegant contrast of chocolate brown and cream and that astonishing beaded decoration which gives it its full personality. This set brings together the covered sugar bowl and the milk jug from the Colmar service, two pieces whose round and generous shapes deliciously contrast with the geometric precision of the decoration. On the cream faience, a fine brown grid pattern is drawn. At each of its intersections, a small raised white enamel bead is placed. This detail is essential to Colmar's charm. The decoration is not merely painted; it possesses a texture, a rhythm, and a light that are revealed when the pieces are turned in one's hands. The deep and shiny brown then envelops the lower parts, the handle, and certain elements of the decoration, giving the set that warm and sophisticated allure so characteristic of tableware from this period. The sugar bowl is particularly charming with its almost spherical shape and its original lid. The grid pattern continues onto the lid in a radiating movement around the brown knob.
