Product description
Studio Ceramics Vase “Albert ’91” – Expressive Hand-Painted Postmodern Art Pottery (1991) A bold, sculptural studio vase from 1991, signed “Albert ’91” on the unglazed terracotta base. This one-of-a-kind piece combines architectural form with painterly surface work — a perfect artefact of late-20th-century studio ceramics, when clay became a legitimate canvas for expressive art. Design & Form The sharply tapered, trapezoidal body (H 28.5 cm) has the presence of a small monolith — angular, architectural, almost postmodern in its stance. Despite the strong geometry, the form never feels rigid: its diagonals and chamfered edges give it a sense of lift and movement. Surface & Glaze Over a deep obsidian-black glossy glaze, the artist applied sweeping, free, gestural brushstrokes in ochre, soft butter-yellow, slate grey-blue and terracotta tones. These strokes overlap and carve luminous paths across the dark background. Each side reads like a different abstract composition — as if the vase were rotated through an artist’s studio and painted from every angle. The glaze is pure gesture: spontaneous, confident, and unmistakably hand-done. The aesthetic recalls the painterly vitality of the late 1980s and early 1990s: Neue Wilde, post-Expressionism, and the studio-ceramic renaissance that blurred the line between vessel and sculpture. Artist & Mark The base is unglazed and hand-signed “Albert 91”. While the precise identity of the artist remains unknown, the execution suggests an experienced studio potter working within the Central European art-ceramics tradition of the era. The combination of architectural form and painterly glaze aligns with the currents seen in German and Austrian studio pottery of the late 20th century. Dimensions Height: 28.5 cm Approximate footprint: 20 × 20 cm Material: Terracotta clay, glossy multicolour glazes Condition: Excellent vintage condition — no chips, cracks, or structural damage. Minor glaze irregularities are inherent to hand-painted studio ceramics. Collector’s Notes This is not merely a vase — it is a ceramic painting in three dimensions. Its dramatic form and expressive surface make it ideal for collectors of studio pottery, modern ceramics, or abstract art. Whether displayed alone or among other postmodern pieces, it holds the room with an unmistakable presence. GENERAL INFORMATION International shipping available with secure, professional packaging. Import duties and taxes are the buyer’s responsibility. Private sale under German law: no returns or warranties.
