French paperweight 1910 with kind small floral work.Design by St Louis. Glass paperweight. A paperweight is an object that can be placed on a desk on papers, to prevent them from blowing away this goes way back in time, in Egypt they already used paperweights. Although you may know crystal maker St.Louis primarily for their elegant glassware and lighting, throughout their impressive history they have also produced small quantities of beautiful and intricate millefiori paperweights. It is believed that this particular glass technique originated in Roman times and was then revived by Murano glass blowers. But it was in 1845 that St.Louis revived this ancient art and produced their first paperweight ball, which continued production for about 15 years until demand waned. A century later, when collectors such as Jeanne Lanvin, King Farouk and Colette rediscovered these mini-masterpieces, production resumed and since 1970 St.Louis has been producing new limited edition models every year, each signed, numbered and dated.See photos.
