Martin Visser was born on January 26, 1922 and was a well-known furniture designer, architect and collector. After studying civil engineering, he worked as an architectural draughtsman. He eventually found a job in the furniture department of De Bijenkorf in Amsterdam, where he was also introduced to the Spectrum company. In 1954, Visser was asked to work for Spectrum as a designer and head of the collection. His numerous and remarkable creations for the company range from sofas and armchairs to dining tables. Since the late 1950s, Visser's solid, bold and geometric designs have defined the Spectrum collection. Influenced by the architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Martin Visser's designs eschew ornamentation in favor of functionality. Although his pieces tend to resemble industrial furniture, he often used techniques that required craftsmanship. The sideboard is in good condition, but shows slight signs of wear. These are clearly visible in the pictures.
