A white road winds through the land. A few houses huddle around the bell tower. To the left, Le Monsard silently dominates the landscape. Here we are in Milly-Lamartine, Burgundy, in this Mâconnais land that held an essential place in the life and work of Alphonse de Lamartine. This large old panel bears the legend Souvenirs de Lamartine, Milly-Lamartine, Le Monsard and is accompanied by several verses taken from Milly ou la Terre natale, a poem published in 1830 in Harmonies poétiques et religieuses. Lamartine knew other horizons, traveled, and contemplated far more spectacular landscapes. Yet, when he evokes Milly, memory prevails. This modest mountain, the paths, and the countryside of his childhood become, under his pen, the guardians of an intimate memory. The village still appears surrounded by fields and vineyards, before contemporary transformations. The rooftops stand out at the foot of Le Monsard while a path crosses the countryside to reach the first houses. A piece of the Mâconnais of yesteryear thus remains suspended in time. The name Milly-Lamartine, officially adopted by the commune in 1902, provides a first historical landmark and confirms that the reproduced photographic document belongs to the early 20th century. Our copy has a particularly decorative presentation. The view, originally known as an old postcard in the series dedicated to Lamartine's souvenirs, here takes on the proportions of a true wall panel measuring approximately 49 x 33 cm, mounted on a rigid support and equipped on the reverse with its hanging system. A few traces left by the decades remain visible and are faithfully presented in the photographs. In a library, a study, an old residence, or a country house, it will naturally find its place among books, engravings, and those objects chosen not only for their beauty but for the history they convey.
