Product description
This set of two small terracotta jugs is truly adorable. Handmade and painted by ceramic artist Johann Wanzenried (1847-1895). The bottom of both jugs bears the text WJ Thoune with two stars and a moon. Based on this specific combination – the monogram, the laughing moon and stars, and the inscription "Thoune" – these jugs were made between 1878 and 1912. 1878 was the year Johann Wanzenried officially expanded his workshop into a full-fledged factory for art ceramics. During this period, the stylized signature was introduced to identify pieces from his famous factory in Steffisburg. Although Johann passed away in 1895, his wife Marie Luise kept the factory active under his original brand name until she eventually sold the company in 1912. These two jugs were therefore probably made at the end of the 19th century, around the year 1900. Thoune is the traditional French spelling for the Swiss city of Thun. The Thoune company today creates ceramic artworks under the name Thun and still produces highly sought-after collector's items. Although they are in very good condition considering their age, the paint on these small jugs is worn in some places. Height: 8.5 centimeters Length: 7.5 centimeters Width: 7 centimeters
