Skrdlovice “Ananas” Vase by František Vízner, 1971 – Amber & Green Czech Art Glass Sculpture
An exceptional and highly atmospheric example of František Vízner’s celebrated “Ananas” series for Skrdlovice Glassworks, designed in 1971. This rare colour variation combines deep amber-brown glass with vivid translucent green, creating a dramatic optical effect that shifts constantly depending on light and angle.
Among collectors, the model is sometimes referred to as the “Toffee” vase due to its rich caramel-like core tones, though this particular example stands out for its unusually vibrant green overlay and extraordinary luminosity.
Far more than a decorative vase, the piece functions as a sculptural light object — an icon of Czech mid-century art glass from the golden era of postwar Bohemian glassmaking.

Design & Optical Effect
The vase’s heavily textured surface consists of rounded geometric protrusions resembling stylised pineapple skin or molten architectural modules. The relief-like exterior captures and refracts light dramatically, while the cylindrical inner chamber creates depth and a remarkable internal glow.
What makes this colourway particularly striking is the dialogue between the warm smoky amber interior and the vivid green outer casing. In daylight the glass appears almost liquid; under stronger illumination the green becomes intensely luminous, producing the hallucinatory optical qualities for which Skrdlovice glass became internationally admired.
Like all authentic Skrdlovice production, the vase was individually hand-blown and shaped hot, resulting in subtle variations and organic asymmetries that make each piece unique.
About the Designer
František Vízner is regarded as one of the most important Czech glass artists of the 20th century. After studying at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, he collaborated with Skrdlovice during the most experimental period of Czech glass production before later establishing his own internationally acclaimed studio practice.
His work is characterised by a rare balance between geometric rigor and sensual materiality. Today, Vízner’s designs are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Corning Museum of Glass and leading European decorative arts museums.
