The name of the piece of furniture - mute servant or valet - goes back to domestic servants who took the master's clothes until the 19th century. The human valet helped with changing clothes and tidied up shirts and trousers. Later, the mute servant made of wood or metal took over his function by simply throwing clothes over the furniture. This made it possible to keep clothes crease and wrinkle-free if you wanted to wear them again the next day.
The clothes rack is in very good condition apart from a few inconspicuous scratches on the frame.
