DESCRIPTION
Offered for sale: A magnificent, intimate, and undeniably authentic oil painting by the Dutch master Jan Hendrik Verburgh (1866-1934).
This refined cabinet piece is a technical masterpiece featuring fabulous detail. Verburgh was known for his mastery in capturing nature, and this work is a textbook example of that.
WHY THIS OBJECT IS MORE THAN WORTH ITS PRICE:
This artwork has been extensively researched and distinguishes itself through historical evidence that you rarely encounter in this completeness with standard auction items:
The Frame (An object in itself): The painting is framed in an extremely heavy, monumental 19th-century frame by the famous firm Biggs & Sons of London (Conduit Street).
This frame is crafted from solid wood and plaster, weighs several kilograms, and exudes pure class.
The original framer's label is still fully intact on the back. The value of this frame alone is considerable for connoisseurs.
Historical Provenance:
The reverse side of the antique panel tells the 'biography' of the work. Original 19th-century handwritten title markings ("Ducks") are visible, as well as old lot notes and the mysterious initials "HP".
This confirms that the work was part of a distinguished international collection.
Craftsmanship Details:
Hand-carved marks (Roman numerals XII) are visible in the wood. This proves the authentic craftsmanship of the 19th-century frame maker;
details that are completely absent in reproductions.
Painting Technique (Impasto):
Upon closer inspection, you can see the beautiful thick paint texture (impasto), especially in the white feathers of the ducks and the floral accents. The paint "lies" on the panel, irrefutably proving its hand-painted nature. SPECIFICATIONS:
Technique: Oil paint on wooden panel.
Panel size: approx. 24 x 18 cm.
Outer frame dimensions: approx. 53 x 43 cm (impressive, deep presentation of several kilos).
Signature: Signed in full and accurately by J.H. Verburgh in the lower left corner.
SIGNS OF USE & CONDITION
Given the respectable age of this object (approximately 120-140 years old), the whole is in remarkably good condition.
The following characteristic features are present, which contribute to the authentic, antique appearance:
Frame: There is light, natural craquelé (fine hairline cracks in the plaster layer) and minimal wear on the gilding at the corners. This gives the frame its unique, weathered 'golden sheen' that cannot be replicated with modern reproductions.
Panel: The paint layer is stable. A very fine-meshed, natural aging pattern is visible in the varnish, which is typical of oil paint on panel from this period.
Back: The back shows the usual signs of time, such as discoloration of the wood and old nail holes, which underscores its honest provenance and age.
In short: An honest, antique piece with the right 'signs of time' without distracting damage.
Condition: Excellent historical condition with a magnificent natural patina on the goldwork.
