A set of four vintage dining chairs from the 1950s that we'd secretly rather keep for ourselves: model SB02 by Cees Braakman for Pastoe. In the early 1950s, Braakman moved to the United States, where he was deeply impressed by the work of Charles & Ray Eames. That inspiration is clearly visible in this model and in almost the entire Pastoe birch series.
This set comes from the estate of the original owners, who purchased the chairs new in the 1950s. After years of faithful service, they were stored in the attic. With some hesitation (especially from the lady of the house), they were eventually parted with to make room.
They have been meticulously restored in our workshop, respecting the original design and natural patina. Some signs of wear are visible here and there, but we see these primarily as character. The chairs' frames are made of laminated beech and, even after 70 years of use, are still very sturdy. The seat and back are veneered with beautiful teak, which has a delicate, soft sheen.
The curved wood, the subtly floating seats, the contrast between the wood types, and that unmistakably airy mid-century look make this truly a feast for the eyes. In our opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces from the Netherlands, it undoubtedly belongs among the design icons. Be sure to check out the contrasting end caps; details are more subtle!
