Magnificent set of three wall sconces by Mathieu Matégot for Atelier Matégot. France, 1950s. Very rare and hard-to-find pieces by this fabulous designer. The structure is made of perforated yellow lacquered metal encircled with brass. The reflectors are brass, with small openings allowing a soft beam of light to pass through. Brass details adorn and decorate the sconces. Each holds two small screw-in bulbs, six in total (included). Height 32 cm. Width 26 cm. Depth 6 cm. Excellent overall condition, some minor signs of age, nothing significant, see photos. They are in perfect working order. Mathieu Matégot: 1910 - 2001. Mathieu Matégot was born in 1910 in Tapio-Sully, Hungary. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts from 1925, where he met Vasarely. He arrived in Paris in 1931. From 1939 to 1944, he devoted himself to tapestry. During the Second World War, he was assigned to a machine-building factory, where he worked with steel and its derivatives. Deeply affected by the perforated metalwork he encountered in Germany during the war, he envisioned a new use for metal in decorative applications. In 1964, he decided to dedicate himself exclusively to tapestry and ceased decorative work. A pioneer in non-figurative tapestry design, accustomed to the visual style of murals as a painter and set designer for the theater, he created entirely new designs in a completely innovative style, published in Aubusson. Initially influenced by Jean Lurçat, he later broke free to adopt a rigorously abstract approach. An Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, recipient of the Grand Prize of Honor at the Madrid International Exposition in 1953, the Gold Medal of the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry in 1955, the Diploma of Honor from the Brussels Universal Exposition in 1958, and the Gold Medal of the 12th Milan Triennale, he is recognized as a major artist. His well-deserved reputation led to commissions from Air France and the Cannes Casino, among others, for projects which he designed and executed.
