Set of two Walter Gropius F51 Bauhaus Lounge Chairs for Tecta. Germany, 1980s. Ref.: CH2009
A striking pair of F51 lounge chairs, designed by Walter Gropius and produced by Tecta, Germany. Originally conceived in 1920 for the director’s room of the Bauhaus in Weimar, the F51 is one of the most distinctive examples of early Bauhaus furniture design. Its bold cubic geometry, generous upholstered volumes and remarkably architectural frame embody Gropius’ radical approach to furniture as an extension of architecture.
The design is particularly celebrated for its innovative cantilever construction. The black wooden frame appears to interlock with the generously padded elements, while the armrests project freely and the backrest seems to float above the floor. This striking interplay between solid volume and linear structure gives the F51 its characteristic sculptural presence.
This pair features a black wooden frame with vibrant red fabric upholstery, creating a particularly expressive contrast that highlights the graphic qualities of the design. The result is unmistakably Bauhaus, yet surprisingly warm and inviting as a lounge chair.
The original F51 dates from 1920, while Tecta has faithfully reproduced the design under licence since 1986. This pair is a vintage Tecta production and is best dated to the 1980s, although the exact year of manufacture cannot be established from the chairs alone. Produced in Germany, the chairs remain remarkably faithful to Gropius’ original proportions and construction.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, showing normal signs of age and use consistent with their history. The red upholstery has an attractive, vibrant appearance, while the black wooden frames retain their strong architectural character. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed impression of the overall condition.
A highly distinctive and collectible example of Bauhaus design, this rare set of two F51 lounge chairs combines historical significance, sculptural geometry and exceptional visual impact. An especially appealing choice for collectors and interiors seeking an authentic statement piece from the Bauhaus tradition.
