Set of 12 hand-painted Gualdo Tadino ceramic teacups, created by Osvaldo Dolci in the 1940s. Diameter 20 cm, height 22 cm. Osvaldo Dolci was the founder and driving force behind a highly active ceramic manufactory between the 1930s and 1960s (I.C.A.D.O. – Industrie Ceramiche Artistiche Dolci Osvaldo), which became a benchmark for mid-20th-century majolica collecting. Osvaldo Dolci's absolute hallmark is the use of metallic lustres, a complex and ancient ceramic technique of Middle Eastern origin, historically rooted in the Gualdo Tadino tradition (thanks to historical masters like Mastro Giorgio). The technique requires a third low-temperature firing in a reducing atmosphere (i.e., oxygen-free, achieved by burning wood or gorse in the kiln). The metallic salts applied to the ceramic transform into a very thin film that gives the pieces iridescent and metallic reflections, shifting towards pure gold and ruby red. Vases, amphorae, and display plates almost always have a glossy or matte black glazed base. The main outlines and details are always emphasized by brushstrokes of pure gold and iridescent reflections that emerge from the darkness of the black background.
