Product description
This is a set of four Mid-Century Modern dining chairs, designed and produced by TON Furniture Company in 1965 Czechoslovakia. Formed in 1953 as a direct evolution of the legendary Thonet brand, TON continued to build on Thonet’s legacy. The result was a uniquely Eastern European take on design during a time when post-war Europe was splitting into East and West.
These chairs are a beautiful example of the Czech Brussel style—the aesthetic movement that defined Czechoslovak design of the late 1950s and early 60s. At the same time, their clean lines, organic shapes, and minimal structure clearly reflect the growing influence of Scandinavian design.
The chairs are made from solid beechwood in a warm honey-brown finish, and feature gently tapered cylindrical legs and a supportive stretcher frame beneath. A key detail is the angled rear supports, which hold a finely curved plywood backrest, giving the chair both strength and elegance. The original burgundy-red textured fabric upholstery provides a warm contrast to the wood and adds subtle character without overwhelming the form.
These chairs were also produced in various cushion colours and materials, but this set remains especially timeless in its materials and tone. Decades on, the design still feels modern, practical, and beautifully balanced.
All four chairs are in good vintage condition with light wear consistent with their age. The wood has developed a soft, natural patina, particularly on the backrests and seat edges, which only adds to their charm and authenticity.
