Beautiful set of six vintage dining chairs, produced by the Dutch furniture factory AwA in the 1960s (marked). This design is attributed to Louis van Teeffelen, and although rumors exist that he designed for AwA, there is no hard evidence to support this.
This set comes from the first owners in Heemstede. The chairs were used there with love for many years and, upon arrival, were even still fitted with the original yellow faux leather upholstery.
Given their condition, the set has been restored in our workshop with great care and respect for the original design. The old upholstery showed tears and holes and has therefore been completely renewed. The old, worn-out foam has also been replaced with new, sturdy, and comfortable foam. The seats and backrests have been reupholstered with a beautiful green bouclé fabric called Odense. Soft in texture, with a subtly coarse character and a nod to the period in which these chairs were designed.
The frames have been thoroughly cleaned and refinished, deliberately preserving the authentic patina. A dent here, a scratch there: that is precisely what gives the set so much charm and character. Moreover, the restoration brings the teak wood beautifully back to life, with a warm glow that provides a lovely contrast to the new upholstery. At first glance, the frames appear simple, but the elegant lines and refined details reveal just how well thought-out the design actually is.
The wide backrest and the new foam combine to ensure excellent seating comfort, making it ideal for both a quick cup of coffee in the morning and long and (too) cozy evenings at the dining table. In short: a beautiful example of Dutch craftsmanship, with a touch of elegance from Scandinavian aesthetics.
